Functional Nursing Attire for Working Moms

Our CEO Jen recently tried out Layton's chic nursing wear for the modern mom and absolutely loved it! If you haven't yet read about our "infants at work" policy, Jen brought baby Charlotte to the office from 3.5-7 months old when she started to crawl (because who has time to chase a mobile baby at work!?). This meant re-organizing the whole closet to prioritize which items could she could easily breastfeed in, but that were also cute and functional at the office. This

She paired it with jeans and a black cardigan for a polished business casual look. The hidden zipper in the front placket opens to offer full access for pumping and feeding. The peplum hem adds a little flair and some extra coverage for the postpartum body. Jen felt great and the team all agreed that this piece should be in her regular rotation!

Below is a guest post from Devon Barrier, the founder of Layton!

Hi there! Devon here—founder and CEO of Layton, a clothing line dedicated to breastfeeding mamas. I am excited to be taking over the Tot Squad blog today to talk about our history and mission.

After the birth of our first baby, I realized that there was a large hole in the retail market for fashionable and functional clothing for breastfeeding. I embraced chic maternity styles while pregnant and loved that pregnancy was beginning to be seen as a time to flaunt your figure as opposed to covering up with oversized muumuus and unflattering silhouettes. Once our son was born, I had hoped to find the same flattering and fun items to wear for breastfeeding and was sadly disappointed. For some mamas, breastfeeding is a journey that lasts a lot longer than pregnancy. I wondered, in my frustration, what women were wearing for that period of time. In an effort to fill that hole in the market (and to also feed my own need for cute clothes), I decided to design my own pieces and Layton was born.

Designs have many requirements before making it into our collection. All of our fabrics are washable at home (to avoid inconvenient trips to the dry cleaners!), offer stretch (for that postpartum body), and are comfortable. I want to offer pieces that also transition easily into the post-breastfeeding wardrobe. Our pieces are intentionally designed to become part of your go-to wardrobe during and after breastfeeding.

As a company, Layton strives to partner with other like-minded businesses. We love working with other female founded and owned companies who support moms. We also keep all of our development, production and manufacturing within the United States. Currently, our inventory is made in the San Francisco Bay Area (where my family is based) and I love that we are supporting our local artisans as we continue our design journey.

The breastfeeding and/or pumping phase of motherhood is a very special time. Having clothes that make a mom feel beautiful during that phase is beyond important. Layton is here to bring excitement for new moms when getting dressed. We can’t wait to dress you!
